What is Cystic Fibrosis?
Cystic fibrosis is a genetic, fatal disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of thirty thousand children and adults in the United States (70 thousand worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that:
- Clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections.
- Obstructs the pancreas, stopping the body's natural enzymes from breaking down and absorbing food.
The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
Since 1955, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has been the driving force behind the pursuit of a cure. Thanks to the dedication and financial backing of our supporters -- patients, families and friends, clinicians, researchers, volunteers, individual donors, corporations and staff -- we are making a difference and have added 32 years to the life expectancy of CF patients in the past 50 years. The current median age of survival is 38 years old.
Top Five Reasons to Support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
- The Foundation is efficient. CFF is one of the most effective and efficient organizations of its kind. It has received a four-star rating for sound fiscal management from Charity Navigator, the largest independent charity evaluator in the United States. Additionally, the Foundation's business model has been recognized by the National Institutes of Health and by publications such as Forbes, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and BusinessWeek.
- The Foundation is a leader. Virtually every approved CF drug available today was made possible because of Foundation support. To date, we have committed nearly $300 million to CF drug discovery and development.
- The Foundation is innovative. The Foundation invests more money in drug discovery and development than any other disease foundation in the country. Forbes, Business Week, USA Today and Newsweek have recognized the Foundation's innovative approach to research, and its venture philanthropy business model is the subject of two Harvard Business School case studies.
- The Foundation is accountable. The Foundation is an accredited charity of the Better Business Bureau's Wise Giving Alliance, meeting all of its Standards for Charitable Accountability.
- The Foundation is adding tomorrows every day. When the Foundation was established, children born with CF were not expected to live long enough to attend elementary school. Thanks to research and care supported by the Foundation, the median predicted age of survival is now 38 years; more than double what it was 25 years ago.
